Emergency Medical Patients: Assessment, Care and Transport (EMPACT) is a sixteen hour training program offering a practical student-driven approach to medical emergencies. The course format utilizes group discussion (small and large), case studies, and Socratic method to help both new and veteran practitioners alike better understand and refine the differential diagnosis of the medical patient.

The EMPACT course has been updated to include the American Heart Association Guidelines for Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation and Emergency Cardiovascular Care. The EMPACT course directs participants to effectively use and rely on both critical thinking and decision making skills to effectively treat medical emergencies. EMPACT focuses on clinical assessment, differential diagnosis identification and the treatment of medical patients.

Topics covered include: Patient Assessment, Airway Management (ABC’s), Chest Pain, Respiratory Emergencies, General Malaise, Allergic Reactions, Neurologic Emergencies, and Altered Mental Status. All of the cases used throughout the course are actual cases EMS providers have experienced in during their careers.

Recommended Texts: It is recommended (not required) that students have a copy of the Brady/Pearson EMPACT Textbook ISBN # 9780135119143. This book is authored by the well-known EMS team of Joseph Mistovich, Daniel Limmer, Alice “Twink” Dalton and Howard Werman, MD. CE/Contact Hours: 16 hours of CE/Contact hours are available for EMT’s, RNs and Paramedics. Snowy River EMS Productions LLC. CE Provider # 60-0290. Snowy River EMS Productions LLC is approved by the California Board of Registered Nursing Provider # CEP15433. The EMPACT Course is valid for 4 years. This course is also approved by the National Registry of EMTs to cover the medical components of recertification.
