On Tuesday afternoon the Sierra County Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors and membership elected a new Vice President, Mary Ervin. Mary is a supporting individual member of the chamber, and we're very lucky to have her join the board. He enthusiasm and can-do-attitude will be well utilized. Mary, a resident of Sierra City, is an active community member, participating in a variety of community-supporting activies all over the county, both east and west side. The chamber is very excited to have Mary join the board and participate in this role. For those of you who don't know her, you'll be able to meet her at the next Chamber meeting.

Our previous VP, Michael Terwilliger will be sadly missed, but we're fortunate to have him very much continue to be a part of the chamber.

    Welcome Mary!

With this past winter's record snow levels, and it finally warming up in the air, we're seeing a lot of very fast moving water in the river. The river waters are very unsafe for activities such as fishing, so the Father's Day Derby planned for Sunday 6/19 is cancelled.

Here is some interesting information about the current water situation-- NOAA's Hydrologic Outlook: http://forecast.weather.gov/showsigwx.php?warnzone=CAZ069&warncounty=CAC091&firewxzone=CAZ269&local_place1=22+Miles+N+Blue+Canyon+CA&product1=Hydrologic+Outlook

I attended the Banff Mountain Film Festival at the Yuba Theatre for the first time, this past weekend. For me it was also the first visit ever to the Yuba Theatre. I am incredibly impressed with both experiences. The Theatre is more than a gem, it is absolutely incredible. The Sierra County Arts Council has done an amazing job at bringing back the Theatre to it former glory. It's easy to imagine the performances from times past, when miners piled in getting entertained. The wood floor has a lot to tell!

The Film Festival was also an incredible experience. Again, thanks to the Sierra County Arts Council, this event was a huge success with at least both Friday and Saturday sold out. Not sure about today's show as I missed it, but a good time was had by all this weekend. Amazing films, great people coming to town to see it. All around lots of fun!

To top it all all, the Taqueria La Cocina De Oro was open—I LOVE THAT PLACE! And with the film festival, and all the mountain bikers in town to work on the Sierra Buttes Trail Stewardship Trail Blaze cleanup, they were more than busy.

If one is to believe Terry the Trash Man, and frankly who wouldn't, the 17th annual Chili Cook-off was held March 5 at the Snow Park area at Yuba Pass. The cook off generally pits the east side of Sierra County against the west side but I believe it also pits everyone who cooks chili that day against everyone else who does the same. The weather cooperated once again and sunshine blessed the crowd of at least 200 folks. There were probably 25 contestants showing off their cooking skill with traditional chili with no beans, chili verde and stuff being pawned as chili but could have been something else entirely. All contestants passed out samples to those who asked and of course worked deligently to bribe the judges, which incidentally works well. The parking lot was full as was the meadow which held dozens of snow mobiles, a preferred way of travel for many Sierra City residents. In following tradition, a small hand cannon, yes a cannon, was set off to quiet the crowd so Terry could announce the winners. Peoples Choice, Judges Choice and a bunch of other feel good awards were given out to jeers and cheers, all in good fun. Jeanine, the Sanitation Sensation and our favorite trash truck driver won a small polar bear, which has nothing to do with chili but her chili was darn good. The 18th annual will be happening again next year about the same time in March rain, snow or shine. Find that old chili pot, mark your calender and don't miss this great event.

The rumors are true! The chamber meeting which has been canceled twice already due to inclement weather is actually taking place this upcoming Friday, March 4.

Same location: Sorracco's Saloon's parlor, in Sierra City
           Same time: 5:30-7 pm

New business, old accomplishments, things we're working on will all be discussed. For those so inclined, the meeting will end with us moving over into the bar for a social mixer.

Come network with other Sierra County businesses, get involved with the chamber and maybe even have some fun when all is said and done.
